The global telecommunication industry market remains competitive. Under the influence of "substitution and differentiation", the price war is becoming fiercer, with operators, especially the fixed-line carriers, experiencing significant decline in service revenues compared with traffic volume.
Confronted with a continuous decrease of ARPU and decreased loyalty of broadband subscribers, fixed operators are now trying to strategically transform themselves, by constructing new and better business models and exploring new areas for growth, through continuous innovation in technologies and services.
According to Wei Leping, the chief engineer for China Telecom Group, the largest fixed-line operator in China, telecom service providers today must enter the IPTV market, providing triple-play or even multi-play services. "It is not optional, but a strategy to survive," he says.
