In a glittering ceremony at the Sheraton Park Lane hotel in London, the editor, Alan Burkitt-Gray, presented awards to some of the most innovative projects in the industry.

"Congratulations to all the award winners," said Burkitt-Gray. "The industry is seeing a wave of innovation which is making a huge difference — to the companies working in the industry and to all of us in business and as consumers. They are making such a difference to the world. We want to celebrate what they are doing."

Nominations for the awards came from readers of Global Telecoms Business magazine, which is published for senior executives in the industry worldwide. "These awards are for the most innovative projects," said Burkitt-Gray.

In addition one individual and one organisation were presented with Editor's Awards.

Paul Reynolds, former CEO of BT Wholesale and now CEO of Telecom New Zealand, was praised as someone who "has played a huge role in one of the most daring transformations in the telecoms industry in the past few years — and now he's moved to New Zealand to do it all again".

The first winner of Global Telecoms Business's Telecommunications in the World award was Télécoms san Frontières, a charitable organisation which flies telecommunications equipment and skilled staff into disaster areas. The award was accepted on behalf of TSF by Monique Lanne-Petit, the co-founder.

BACKGROUND
Global Telecoms Business magazine, which is read by the industry leaders in the telecommunications industry worldwide, will be publishing its 100th issue later in September. The magazine is part of the Euromoney Institutional Investor PLC group.

The Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards were first presented in 2007. About 250 leaders of the industry from around the world attended the 2008 ceremony at the Sheraton Park Lane Hotel in London on the evening of Tuesday 9 September 2008.

Guests at the ceremony included chief executive officers, chief technology officers and other leaders from operators and vendors throughout the world, including Europe, China, Africa, India, Russia, North and South America, and the Pacific.

Hundreds of nominations for the industry's innovative projects were received from the readers of Global Telecoms Business since early in 2008 in a number of key categories.

The winners, as selected by the judging panel, represent the most innovative projects in the industry worldwide in four key categories:
1: fixed infrastructure and operations
2: wireless infrastructure and operations
3: business fixed and mobile service innovations
4: consumer fixed and mobile service innovations

Awards went to projects in each category, with each project — wherever possible — represented by a telecoms service provider and one or more suppliers.

In addition, there are two editor's awards, one for an organisation and one for an individual.

The Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards 2008 were sponsored by Juniper Networks — gold sponsor — and Huawei Technologies — silver sponsor. The sponsors played no part in the selection of nominations or the final judging process. GTB
