One of the few mobile cash services in the developed world, DCMX was launched in April 2006 as a way for customers to use their phones to pay for goods and services. The service reached one million within six months and five million in February 2008.

DCMX uses a network of 420,000 readers/writers across the country, in stores, restaurants, taxis and other places.

The company has three levels of service, the simplest allowing customers to spend up to ¥10,000 ($104) a month, with the charges being added to the mobile phone bill. Higher level plans offer loyalty points, discounts and bonuses. Phones can be locked if lost or stolen. GTB

Comments
  • That still seems solid rather than massive growth. Three years to get to ten million users seems a lot slower than mobile money growth in developing markets like India or in African countries.
