The new centre is at Woking, about 40 kilometres out of London, adding to existing units in the London docklands and in Cambridge, to the north, said Simon Vye, head of the company’s operations in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
“We will be building more, not just in the UK but in Europe and across the globe,” said Vye at the official opening.
Group CEO David Thodey, who has taken over leadership of Telstra from Sol Trujillo, indicated that the company plans to use the expanded capacity to open up new services for customers. “Data centres are one thing but utility computing is cheaper,” he said. “It’s about the intelligence in the network. We’re partnering with Cisco very strongly in this area and with Sun.”
Some 250 customers in Australia are using SAP or other applications on Telstra’s virtualised platform, he added.
“The demand of IP data is doubling every 13-14 months on our network, driven by video conferencing and other data-intensive applications.”
Global Telecoms Business will be publishing a full interview with Thodey shortly. GTB
