Comment: There will be a collective sigh of relief throughout the industry when India finally gets moving on its 3G auction — though the February timing is not good for those executives planning to attend Mobile World Congress in Barcelona from February 12.
The bandwidth auctions for third generation mobile phone services in India will be held in February 2010.
The federal government is likely to yield $5.35 billion through the auctions. Earlier, the auctions were scheduled to be held on January 14.
The auctions have been postponed three times since they were first set for January 16 2009. The delay has been due to issues such as a rise in the starting price of bandwidth and the number of slots to be sold.
The 3G services will allow subscribers to get faster internet connectivity on mobile phones and download audio and video data.
The government is planning to auction four sets of bandwidth, along with the one already allotted to state-run telecom service providers, BSNL and MTNL.
The starting price for one such slot has been set at $754.3 million. GTB
