Comment: At the same time as aiming to keep and improve its share of the overall phone market, Nokia needs to boost its presence in the advanced smartphone sector — where it faces increased competition, from the likes of RIM, Apple and — soon — even Google.
Nokia is hoping to sell over 500 million handsets in 2010. Rick Simonson, CEO of Nokia’s cell phones division, said the company will be shipping the units across three platforms, which include the Mameo, Symbian and its proprietary platform.
The company’s target for 500 million handsets is said to be about 40% of the global market share. At the end of the third quarter, Nokia’s global handset market share was at 38%.
The company forecasted 10% growth in cell phone market volumes in 2010 on December 2. Its market share was estimated nearly at par with that of 2009.
Prior to November 2009, Simonson was acting as Nokia’s CFO with responsibilities including group finance and control, internal audit, treasury, investor relations, M&A, indirect sourcing and venture capital investments. GTB
