Comment: Logically there is huge potential in mobile advertising: the operators know who their consumers are, where they are, and what they like in terms of websites. But the market has taken longer to grow than most of its evangelists had hoped — but with Google and Apple now in powerful positions, that is set to change.
Apple is planning to buy mobile advertising start up, Quattro Wireless, for $275 million. Apple had previously planned to buy AdMob, a Quattro rival, which was bought by Google for $750 million.
Both AdMob and Quattro are targeting the fast-growing smartphone advertising market. Google plans to launch an Android-powered mobile phone, Nexus One.
Quattro has raised close to $30 million from two main venture investors, Highland Capital Partners and Globespan Capital Partners. Based in Waltham, Massachusetts, its clients include Ford, Disney, and the US National Football League. GTB
