Comment: There’s a consolidation of the base station business in India at the moment — a sensible move by highly competitive operators seeking to drive down costs. Meanwhile the mobile app store is an interesting move, which may well give Infosys a start in the global market
Indian telecom services provider Aircel is planning to sell 17,000 telecom towers by mid-February. The company is said to be in talks with three Indian players.
Tata Quippo and GTL Infrastructure are said to be interested in the purchase. Aircel has about 38,000 towers, of which it owns nearly 17,000.
The company has also entered into an agreement with software exporter, Infosys Technologies, to launch the first mobile application store in India.
Infosys will offer a platform, Flypp, for the Aircel’s mobile application store, Aircel COO Gurdeep Singh said. The store will provide consumers a range of applications related to health, finance and entertainment.
Infosys may also offer the mobile application platform to other global and domestic service providers, said Infosys COO, SD Shibulal. GTB
