Comment: Spain is Clearwire’s first major international WiMax investment, where ultimately it will be able to challenge LTE technology by operators such as Telefónica and Vodafone — just as, in the US, Clearwire’s WiMax will compete with LTE plans by Verizon Wireless and others.
Clearwire is planning to expand its WiMax network in Malaga, Spain. The mobile 4G service, Instanet, will be one of the first 4G networks in Europe and the first metropolitan 4G network in Spain, covering Malaga’s metropolitan area of nearly 600,000 people.
The wireless service provider is in discussion with satellite, telecom and consumer electronics companies about using its WiMax network. The network’s backers include Intel and Motorola.
In October 2009, Clearwire selected Alvarion as its network infrastructure supplier for the launch of its WiMax services in Malaga and ZTE for the Spanish city of Seville.
WiMax, which has a wider range and bandwidth than Wi-Fi, is popular in underserved rural areas and densely populated cities.
Clearwire, whose majority shareholder is Sprint, is building an extensive WiMax network in the US. Other shareholders include Google and a number of cable TV operators. Clearwire’s international operations are headed by Barry West, a former BT executive who headed Sprint’s move into WiMax. GTB
