Comment: Huawei has huge research facilities in China but has recognised that it needs local presence in different countries in order to provide customised service — and India is an acknowledge centre of software expertise.

Huawei Technologies is looking to invest $500 million in its research and development operations in southern India. The Chinese telecoms equipment company will make its investment over five years to help its Indian operations become a resource for its global operations.

Huawei will set up a manufacturing unit in India, which will help it avoid steep anti-dumping duties on Chinese goods. The manufacturing operation is estimated to be ready by later this year.

Huawei’s Indian unit is planning to add 5,000 employees to its current 2,000-strong workforce at its R&D centre in Bangalore in the southern state of Karnataka.

Huawei Technologies India may partner with Indian state-run telecom equipment maker, ITI. It may also consider contract manufacturing, said the unit’s CEO, Max Yang. The unit expects revenue “to be stable” in 2010, but is expecting growth for 2011, added Yang. GTB
