Comment: SingTel has a number of strategic investments across the Asia Pacific region, potentially showing strong growth over the next few years.
Thailand’s largest mobile phone operator, Advanced Info Service, may spend $335 million to expand its network in 2010. The company, which had 28.5 million subscribers in 2009, is targeting 1.5 million net new subscribers in 2010.
AIS has partnered with state-owned TOT to allow its customers to access third generation services on TOT’s spectrum from the start of February 2010. AIS will transfer all revenue collected from customers using TOT’s 3G services, to TOT, said AIS CEO Wichian Mektrakarn.
AIS, which currently operates in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chonburi and Hua Hin, is looking to expand the 3G service on its existing 900 MHz network to15-22 more cities in Thailand.
AIS, which is 21.4% owned by Singapore Telecommunications, has no plans for additional borrowing this year, as it has around $606 million to $910 million in cash available for investment. GTB
