Latin American wireless carrier Nextel Mexico may place its bid for new frequencies to bolster its coverage in Mexico.
The company is owned by US-based NII Holdings, which operates in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Peru and Chile under the Nextel brand. NII is not connected with Sprint Nextel, the US mobile operator.
The company is planning to offer 3G technology across the region to improve services and boost its client base. The auction will provide companies the right to operate blocks of frequency in the 1.7 and 1.9 gigahertz bands.
Companies including Spain’s Telefónica and Mexican media company Televisa are planning to join forces, in order to improve their chances of buying the best bands. Televisa was ready to pay $1 billion for a stake of between 20% and 30% in Nextel Mexico.
Separately, Telmex is likely to invest over $784 million in 2010. The Mexican company, owned by billionaire Carlos Slim, is aiming to boost coverage and promote information technology services. GTB
