Comment: Lenovo is the company that took over IBM’s personal computer business, initially under the IBM brand. Today it has an international reputation and could be a strong force in the phone market.

Lenovo is planning to introduce an Android mobile phone in China. The LePhone will be available in China in May and in the overseas markets later in the year.

The phone, which uses Google’s Android platform, is not likely to be affected by the ongoing spat between China and Google.

Other PC makers, which include Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Acer and Asustek Computer, have launched handsets and other mobile Internet devices to diversify their business.

Separately, Lenovo’s shareholders have approved the personal computer maker’s plan to buy back Lenovo Mobile Communication Technology. The group will be paying $200 million in a cash and stock deal for the mobile handset maker.

The acquisition is expected to strengthen Lenovo’s share in the Chinese mobile internet market. It is it seeking to diversify its product offerings and boost margins. GTB
