Telefónica is planning to double its investments in Peru between 2010 and 2013. The Spanish telco is looking to expand and enhance its coverage, networks and technological platforms in the country.
Telefónica will spend $1.5 billion to fund a new fibre-optic network that will help boost internet coverage in the country’s Andean region.
The network will stretch from Pucallpa to Cusco and will in turn be linked to another network in the coast.
The new network will cover over 1,200 kilometres and will be set up over the next two to three years. It will give over five million Peruvians access to the internet for the first time.
The move will bring the Spanish company’s total fibre-optic network in Peru to more than 5,000 kilometres.
Telefónica has been operating in the Latin American country since 1994. GTB
