Comment: Carphone Warehouse has been an aggressive player in the UK market, winning a huge market share for internet access and unbundled phone lines. Its retail section, which retains the name, is forming a joint venture with the US group Best Buy, while TalkTalk will become an independent company — still headed by Charles Dunstone — that is set to win market share across a number of sectors.

UK operator TalkTalk is planning to roll out new television and mobile phone services. The company is seeking to launch a mobile phone service in 2010 and will concentrate on selling the product to its 4.2 million broadband customers.

The company is looking for a wholesale deal with one of the five mobile network operators in the UK.

The telecom unit of Carphone Warehouse may become a full fledged TV operator by early 2011. It is also involved in Project Canvas, a group led by the BBC that is preparing to unveil an internet-connected TV set-top box before the end of 2010.

The move comes after Charles Dunstone, CEO of Carphone Warehouse, published documents about the demerger of its retail and telecoms units. After the demerger TalkTalk and New Carphone Warehouse, which will focus on phone and electronics retail, will be listed separately from March 29 2010. GTB
