Bharti Airtel and Reliance Communications are setting up online mobile applications stores. Bharti Airtel has launched Airtel App Central, while RCom will introduce the first version of its mobile applications store under the Reliance Applications Store brand by the end of February.
Airtel will provide over 1,250 free and paid applications across 25 categories, such as business, games, books and social networking, and the cost will be automatically added to the customer’s mobile bill or deducted from the available talk-time.
RCom said the first version of its applications store will go live for GSM customers by the end of February, and an expanded version across the CDMA and GSM handsets will be launched by the end of March.
Other mobile operators and handset makers including Apple, Google, Motorola, Vodafone, BlackBerry, Sony Ericsson and Samsung have also adopted the mobile applications model to enhance their revenues. GTB
