France Telecom will resume its investment in a fibre optic network and spend €2 billion to bring very high-speed internet service to homes across France. The company will invest between now and 2015 to install fibre-to-homes in Paris and 15 other cities. It will also start equipping smaller provincial cities from the end of this year.
Last year, France Telecom had put its investment plans on hold due to pending regulatory clarification. The investments will be part of its €2 billion a year capital expenditure programme to modernise and upgrade its French network, instead of adding to it.
The investments in fibre will help the company win back market share in fixed-line services and raise the revenues it can earn from its customers through new services, such as video-on-demand, or high-definition television provided on multiple TV sets or computers. GTB
