Brazil may invest up to $10.8 billion in state telco, Telecomunicacoes Brasileiras (TeleBras), according to reports. The move would allow the company to sell broadband service for half the price charged by competitive carriers.
TeleBras will seek to provide broadband services directly to consumers, increasing competition and availability, said Cezar Alvarez, national coordinator of digital policy for President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.Alvarez.
The company may offer broadband services from $8.1-18.9 monthly, less than the average $37.8 charged by existing carriers. The aim is to use TeleBras to meet a goal of boosting broadband access to 30% of the country’s poorest population, from the current 0.6%.
President Alvarez will review the TeleBras plan and announce measures next month. It may include a plan to have TeleBras manage the nation’s fiber optics infrastructure. GTB
