China’s ZTE and Spanish operator Telefónica are launching a range of handsets in Latin America under Telefónica’s brand.

ZTE will manufacture the handsets exclusively for Telefónica for sale in 12 Latin American countries — Mexico, Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Guatemala, El Salvador, Panama and Nicaragua.

Telefónica is seeking to meet the needs of Latin American consumers who have specific requirements in terms of handset design and desired features, said the company’s director of mobile business, Luis Miguel Gilperez. ZTE will customise a complete range of handsets for the market.

By the end of 2009 ZTE entered into handsets deals with eight of the world’s 10 operators.

Its rival Chinese operator, Huawei, is also focusing on supplying customised handsets and terminals for operators to sell under their own brand. GTB
