Telefónica is to launch cloud computing services in Latin America in partnership with NEC, which is already working with the operator in Spain.

Telefónica said it aims to support small and medium enterprises in the central and South American countries where it operates.

NEC said it will deploy the platform to provide applications including logistics, location, collaboration, virtual PC, customer relationship management, enterprise resource planning, health, games and media applications.

Telefónica, announcing the deal at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, said the project would break down the current entry barriers to new technologies and to IT applications, while encouraging an open environment for developers to launch new applications.

Speaking to Global Telecoms Business, Michio Okamoto, NEC’s vice president for carrier and media solutions, said that Telefónica launched its operations in Spain in September 2009, using independent software vendors to offer applications for small and medium business.

Users had “psychological barriers over putting their business information in the cloud”, he said, but carriers have an advantage because they are trusted by customers. “Carriers have experience of social infrastructure for over a century,” he added. “We are doing business as a partner.”

Telefónica has “several hundred” business customers for the service in Spain, he noted. Services “must be sold with vertically integrated solutions”. GTB
