Mexico’s telecom regulator, Cofetel, has received offers from 17 potential bidders for the auction of wireless spectrum. The agency is planning to sell spectrum in the 1850-1990 megahertz and 1710-2170 megahertz bands in two separate auctions.
América Móvil, headed by Carlos Slim, Spain’s Telefónica, Grupo Iusacell and a consortium of Nextel Mexico and media firm Grupo Televisa are among the potential bidders for both the auctions.
Units of a Mexican fixed-line operator Axtel and cable TV company, Megacable Holding, have filed for only the auction of 1710-2170 megahertz spectrum.
Cofetel is looking to provide additional spectrum to existing operators and enable at least one new carrier with nationwide coverage. The auctions are planned to raise competition in the wireless sector, where América Móvil’s Telcel unit controls about 72% of subscribers.
The winners of the two auctions will be named within 30 days after qualified investors tender bids on May 25. GTB
