Nokia is considering making mobile phones in Argentina, according to reports. The company is reviewing the possibility of arranging mobile device assembly in Argentina, Nokia spokesman Tapani Kaskinen told Reuters.
The timeframe for a decision or whether the project will involve Nokia’s own production or work through a contractor have not been disclosed.
The mobile phone maker has nine plants worldwide, including sites in Brazil and Mexico. It has started expanding production in lower-cost countries. It shut down a plant in Bochum, Germany and started production in Romania.
Nokia has made job cuts at Salo, its Finnish plant. In 2009, the company’s sales in Latin America dropped 34% to $4.2 billion. Latin America is the now the company’s second smallest region after North America. GTB
