India’s Aircel plans $1.4bn expansion
26 February 2010
Aircel, which operates in 18 regions of India, will use proceeds from sale of its towers to expand into five more zones to give nationwide coverage
Indian mobile company Aircel is planning to spend $1.4 billion to expand operations. It will also invest in existing services to become a pan-India operator.
The telecom company, which operates in 18 telecom circles — or regions — across the country, plans to grow its operations to 23 circles. It seeks to start operations in the remaining circles of Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Gujarat and Punjab by June 2010.
To fund the investment, Aircel will use proceeds from the sale of its tower infrastructure in January 2010. The mobile operator disposed about 17,000 towers to GTL Infrastructure for around $1.85 billion.
Aircel is also targeting to triple its subscriber base to 100 million users by 2012. Aircel is also planning to hit the enterprise business and target corporate and SMEs. GTB
