UK cable television operator Virgin Media is planning to increase its broadband service speed to 100 megabits a second by the end of 2011, though roll-out will start in 2010.
CEO Neil Berkett said: “There is nothing we can’t do with our fibre optic cable network, and the upcoming launch of our flagship 100 megabits service will give our customers the ultimate broadband experience.” The company’s maximum speed at the moment is 50 megabits a second.
Virgin now has a total of 4.77 million subscribers for its services, of whom 60.5% use three of its services — pay-TV, broadband, fixed-line or mobile telephony products, while 10.7% use all four.
Virgin has its own broadband network built in the 1980s by a number of regional cable TV operators, all of which merged into a single business. GTB
