Telenet to test LTE in Belgium
04 March 2010
Belgian cable operator Telenet plans to invest in LTE technology for its own mobile network
Belgian operator Telenet is to test 4G mobile services using LTE in Belgium. The service, based on the GSM family’s so-called long-term evolution from 3G to 4G, will offer 10 times faster data speed on mobiles to consumers.
Telenet, which started as a cable operator, is the first operator in Belgium to announce investment in the LTE mobile technology. It is currently an MVNO, operating on the network of Mobistar, which is owned by France Telecom — one of the few of its businesses not to use the Orange brand.Telenet is hoping to provide speeds of about 80 megabits a second. The pilot programme will begin in the city of Mechelen and surrounding areas, with three new antennas especially set up to manage mobile data. Telenet is seeking to buy radio frequency to run its own network. GTB
