Sony is planning to introduce a new series of handheld products including a smart phone, according to reports. With the launch of the smart phone, the Japanese electronics group is looking to counter Apple’s increasing range of portable devices.
The new offering, which is likely to be introduced later in the year, will work with Sony’s new online media platform, Sony Online Service. The smart phone will be capable of downloading and playing PlayStation games. Product-specific details as well as the price are yet to be finalised.
Sony, headed by Howard Stringer, is working with Sony Ericsson, an equal venture with L M Ericsson Telephone, on the new product. Sony’s senior vice president, Kunimasa Suzuki, is responsible to oversee the new team developing mobile products.
The Japanese company is also developing a portable device, which shares features of netbooks, electronic-book readers and handheld-game machines. GTB
