Qatar Telecom and Tata Communications are teaming up to develop the Tata Global Network Gulf Project. Under the deal, Qtel will facilitate Qatar’s role as the designated landing point in the regional network.

The project is an undersea cable network that directly connects the Gulf region to business hubs and city centres globally. Other local partners in the project include the Bahrain Internet Exchange, Nawras of Oman, Mobily of Saudi Arabia and Etisalat of the UAE.

The project, which is scheduled for completion in 2011, will support an extended portfolio of telecoms services such as global ethernet, MPLS-based VPN and global telepresence.

Tata, headed by Srinath Narasimhan, has built up an extensive international network — the Tata Global Network — based on Indian international operator VSNL and North American operator Teleglobe. GTB
