LG has rolled out a smartphone based on Google’s Android operating system in South Korea. The South Korean company is looking to increase its smartphone offerings with some 20 models in 2010, half of which will be based on the Android.
The model LG-KH5200 will be sold by KT. It will compete against Motorola’s Android-based smartphone, Motoroi, which was launched earlier in 2010 through SK Telecom.
The company intends to claim a double-digit share of the global smartphone market by 2012. Currently, three players — Nokia, Blackberry maker RIM and Apple — control three quarters of the smartphone market.
LG is targeting to sell 140 million mobile phones this year, compared to 117 million sold in 2009, to claim about 10% of the global market.
Samsung Electronics will also launch Android phones in March 2010. GTB
