The Egyptian telecoms regulator has extended the deadline to bid for two restricted licences until April 15. The National Telecom Regulatory Authority made the move after at least five of the prospective bidders requested to postpone the closing date for submitting bids.
The country invited proposals in September for the licences, which involve supplying cable, voice and internet services to residential compounds. Egypt is expecting the licences to generate about $1 billion in investments over five years.
The proposals were initially due in January, with the successful bidders scheduled to begin work in the second half of 2010. The deadline was extended by two months in December.
The potential bidders include existing operators, Mobinil and Vodafone Egypt, along with regional operator, Orascom Telecom. GTB
