Sprint Nextel will launch its WiMax phone during next week’s annual CTIA industry trade show. The first 4G phone in the US, dubbed the Supersonic, has been produced by Taiwanese company HTC and will use the 4G network built by Clearwire, in which Sprint owns a 56% stake.
The carrier, which has lost about nine million customers over the past three years, is hoping the phone will attract heavy users of the mobile internet and boost its operations. Sprint injected an additional $1.18 billion into Clearwire in November 2009 and revamped its executive bonus targets early this month to include subscriber additions on the 4G network. The company now offers 4G in 27 markets.
Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group, is looking to have its 4G network, using LTE, in 25-30 markets by the end of 2010. AT&T is planning to roll out 4G over the next few years. CTIA Wireless 2010 is in Las Vegas on March 23-25. GTB
