Megacable Holdings has dropped out of the Mexican government’s planned auction of mobile-phone frequencies. The Mexican cable-TV provider has called off its plan after concluding that providing its own wireless service will not be financially viable.
The decision allows the company to enter into a reselling deal with Telefónica to provide packages of TV and wireless plans to Megacable’s customers. Megacable will most likely select Madrid-based Telefónica for a reselling agreement if it does not bid for airwaves in the auction.
Grupo Televisa, which operates three cable operators in Mexico, is participating in the auction in union with NII Holdings. Axtel, the Mexican land-line phone company, and land-line carrier, VDT Comunicaciones, have also registered to enter the airwaves auction.
América Móvil, Telefónica and Grupo Iusacell have also proposed to be a part of the auction, which will start on May 25 2010. GTB
