Deutsche Telekom is looking to enter into a partnership with a New York-based hedge fund that is seeking to build a new mobile phone network. T-Mobile USA is in preliminary talks with Harbinger Capital about becoming a wholesale client on the hedge fund’s 4G mobile phone network.
Harbinger revealed its plans in March 2010 to set up 4G network in 2011. The hedge fund, founded by Philip Falcone, owns radio spectrum suitable for a network based on 4G wireless technology. Last month it recruited Sanjiv Ahuja, former CEO of Orange in Europe, to head the operation, which will use terrestrial and satellite-delivered capacity.
Harbinger is not planning to offer services to clients, but instead wants to arrange wholesale deals with established mobile operators and other new entrants in the telecoms sector.
The operator was previously also looking for options that could give it access to additional spectrum for 4G services. GTB
