Telebras is reviving some of its businesses to provide a broadband internet network as well as services. At present, the Brazilian company does not have any operations in the telecoms sector.
Telebras will participate in the national broadband programme by providing the government with a private communications network and broadband for schools, hospitals and other public amenities.
The company will also provide infrastructure and support networks to existing private telecom services, along with broadband access to isolated areas.
Telebras, which was formerly state-run, was sold to private investors in the late 1990s. In 2009, the Brazilian government was said to be considering restoring the operator due to doubts over the reliability of private services. GTB
