Virgin Mobile has started a mobile virtual network operation in Qatar. Richard Branson, Virgin’s founder, has launched a tie-up between his company and Qatar Telecom (Qtel).
In a brand licensing agreement with Qtel, Virgin will operate its prepaid service in the Gulf state as Virgin Mobile Qatar.
The details about which other Qtel markets Virgin Mobile is interested in have not been disclosed. Virgin Mobile Qatar will be the eighth Virgin-branded operation. Virgin is considering more partnerships with Qtel in the Middle East and Asia.
Qtel, which operates in 17 countries, has a 65% stake in Indonesian telco Indosat. Nasser Marafih, the CEO of Qtel, said the operator may seek to buy other companies as part of its expansion plans. GTB
