Televisa only fibre bidder in Mexico

Grupo Televisa’s consortium, including Telefónica and Megacable, has won the government of Mexico’s auction to operate a new fibre national network

Mexico has approved a consortium led by Grupo Televisa as a qualified bidder in an auction to operate unused fibre-optic lines. The consortium includes Megacable Holdings and Telefónica.
The Communications and Transportation Ministry rejected Grupo Iusacell as it did not agree to the auction rules. Televisa seeks to buy a 20-year lease of two cables covering nearly 12, 400 miles across Mexico, which will provide the companies a way to route long-distance phone and internet traffic without renting capacity from Telmex.
Televisa has to make a qualifying bid under the auction rules to win the lines, owned by state power company, Comision Federal de Electricidad. The Mexican government is seeking at least $68 million from the auction. It will start the bidding process on May 25 2010. GTB
