Russian operator Yota is looking to invest $100 million on the launch of LTE networks in five Russian cities in 2010. The Russian wireless internet provider is expected to make a total investment of about $2 billion in LTE.
The first city to receive LTE will be Kazan, followed by Novosibirsk and Samara. The company, which currently operates in Russian cities of Moscow, St Petersburg, Ufa, Sochi and Krasnodar and has investments in Belarus, Peru and Nicaragua, had planned to unveil WiMax in 15 more Russian cities.
Yota and software vendor Microsoft won an award at the 2009 Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards for their work on carrying voice over mobile WiMax.
It is now looking to offer LTE in the same cities and will use the same frequency band in which its WiMax networks currently run.
The company has entered into deals for the delivery of 1,000 base stations. It will introduce LTE technology in Moscow and Saint Petersburg at the end of 2011. GTB
