Mexico has secured bids worth about $42.7 million after it held four rounds of mobile phone spectrum auctions. The country, which has received 14 bids, designed the auctions to strengthen competition against América Móvil.
The country’s Federal Telecommunications Commission has received $13.4 million in bids for 30 megahertz of spectrum in the 1.9 gigahertz band. About $30 million was generated for 90 megahertz in the 1.7 gigahertz band.
Bidders Telefónica and NII Holdings are seeking capacity to build high-speed 3G wireless networks to capture users from América Móvil, which has 71% of Mexico’s mobile phone clients.
América Móvil, controlled by billionaire Carlos Slim, is also bidding for more spectrum to improve quality. NII is participating in the auction with broadcaster, Grupo Televisa, along with Grupo Iusacell.
Other bidders include Radiomovil Dipsa, Pegaso Comunicaciones y Sistemas, the Nextel-Televisa consortium and Comunicaciones Celulares de Occidente. The licence winners are likely to be declared in June. GTB
