AT&T is selling its Japan-based outsourcing services operations to Internet Initiative Japan, part-owned by rival NTT, for $101 million. The provider is disposing of its unit, which has 1,600 Japanese businesses as customers, to focus on multinational companies it can serve in different countries.
AT&T will continue to serve its multinational corporate clients in the region and intends to maintain its presence in Japan through its AT&T Global Network.
AT&T has set up a subsidiary, which will encompass all of its outsourcing operations, to help the change in ownership of the outsourcing unit. The subsidiary will later be sold for $100.7 million to IIJ, which is owned nearly a quarter by Japanese communications giant NTT.
Nasdaq-listed IIJ, founded in 1992, says it is one of Japan’s leading internet-access and comprehensive network solutions providers, mainly catering to high-end corporate customers. It has one of the largest internet backbone networks in Japan, and between Japan and the US. GTB
