Thailand’s telecom regulator has approved the refarming of unused frequencies in two bands to issue new wireless broadband licences. The National Telecommunications Commission will reassign unused frequencies in the 2.3-2.4 gigahertz band and the 2.5-2.69 gigahertz band, said commission member Natee Sukolrat.
The NTC will offer 10-year licences in the 2.3-2.4 gigahertz band. TOT PCL owns 64 megahertz of this bandwidth, while CAT Telecom holds 8 megahertz. The remaining is used by government units.
TOT will have to shift 34 megahertz to other operators, which must be approved by the agency. In the 2.5-2.69 gigahertz band, only 40 megahertz is unoccupied. The NTC will auction 30 megahertz to small operators to run broadband wireless access services in remote areas.
The agency is also planning a September auction for three 3G licences in the 2.1 gigahertz spectrum, which may be upgraded to 3.9G. Advanced Info Service, Total Access Communication and True Move are interested in the 3G licence auction. GTB
