Grupo Televisa, Telefónica and Megacable Holdings have made a combined $69.1 million bid for the right to use fibre-optic cables in Mexico. The trio is planning to invest another $101 million to prepare the fibre for use.
The Mexican government has also secured bids for its fibre-optics cable from Carlos Slim’s Telefonos de Mexico. The winning suitor will be able to exploit the fibre to direct long- distance voice and internet traffic across the country instead of paying Telmex.
The state-controlled power company, Comision Federal de Electricidad, currently owns the fibre lines in Mexico. Megacable, Telefónica and Televisa will each operate one-third of the network’s capacity and will compete with each other, providing routing services to other telecommunications companies. GTB
