Google, AT&T and Verizon have set up a group to advise the US Federal Communications Commission and other government agencies on ways to manage the internet.
The Broadband Internet Technical Advisory Group will look to educate regulators and politicians about network management and other technical issues that can affect web performance.
The group will also help the industry regulate itself instead of relying on policy makers for questions around how to handle internet use. Dale Hatfield, a professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder, will manage the new group.
Before joining the university, Hatfield was the chief of the office of engineering and technology at the FCC and, before that, its chief technologist.
Google wants the group to develop ideas that will help internet service providers manage use on their networks without limiting access. Cisco Systems, Comcast, Dish Network, EchoStar, Intel, Level 3 Communications, Time Warner Cable and Microsoft are also part of the initial participants in the group. GTB
