Fujitsu and Toshiba are planning to merge their mobile businesses to create Japan’s second largest mobile phone maker. The joint venture, which will have a market share of nearly 20%, will possibly be formed by the end of 2010.
Fujitsu, which manufactures handsets for NTT DoCoMo, will hold a greater stake in the combined company. Toshiba supplies phones to KDDI. Both the companies are aiming to boost overseas sales by focusing on next-generation mobile phones.
Combining Toshiba and Fujitsu would place the two companies behind Sharp, which has a share of 26.2%, overtaking Panasonic at 15.1%. GTB
