Research in Motion and Motorola have reached an agreement in their patent dispute over key technology found in their smartphones. As part of the settlement, BlackBerry maker RIM will make a one-time payment and ongoing royalties in exchange for a halt to the lawsuit.
Financial details about the long-term cross-licensing deal have not been disclosed. The deal includes standards, such as 2G, 3G and 4G technology, wifi, wireless email and other industry standards. It also includes a transfer of various patents.
Motorola had filed a case against RIM before the International Trade Commission in the US in January. It alleged RIM infringed on technology patents related to wireless networks. The two companies also fought before courts and regulatory bodies in the US and the UK.
RIM does not expect the settlement to affect its operating results for the first fiscal quarter of 2011, or beyond. GTB
