UNE EPM Telecomunicaciones has won the Colombian spectrum auction that will enable the company to roll out a mobile broadband in the 2.5 gigahertz band.
The telecom company, based in Medellín, will pay $40 million for 50 megahertz of spectrum in the 2.5-2.69 gigahertz band.
It won the auction in competition with DirectTV over 14 rounds of bidding for the spectrum.
UNE, which currently offers fixed-line and pay-TV services, will inject $75 million in services including fixed-line, TV, internet, broadband, long-distance and mobile.
The company is planning to use the spectrum to provide mobile internet and audiovisual content. The company is seeking to operate mobile TV services in future, subject to approval from regulators.
UNE also plans to launch LTE and may select an infrastructure provider in the next three or four months. GTB
