Nepal Telecom is planning to establish an optical fibre connection with China by the end of fiscal year 2010/11, according to reports. The optical fibre connection will link NT’s network with China Telecom’s network from the Nepalese-Chinese border.
NT has installed infrastructure to one of the connection points, Tatopani, but is yet to build infrastructure to the other, Rasuwa.
NT currently has an optical fibre connection with India and it links to Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan and other countries through India. It still uses satellite connections for Europe and North America.
According to Anoopranjan Bhattarai, deputy managing director-planning division at NT, once the connection with China is established, the cost of telecom services to and from other countries will drop. GTB
