The Federal Communications Commission is set to adopt new rules for the US broadband industry. Democrats at the US regulator have agreed to start a formal consideration to apply new rules for high-speed internet companies, such as AT&T and Comcast. These companies have until now operated virtually free of the FCC’s oversight.
The media regulator will seek only limited enhancement to its regulatory powers, said Julius Genachowski, FCC chairman.
The legal change being sought by Genachowski will change the classification of broadband providers from Title I information services to Title II telecommunications services. It would also legally give the FCC more authority to enforce rate changes and unbundling.
AT&T has criticised the FCC proposal, which it said will create investment uncertainty and may cost jobs. GTB
