Mozambique has received bids from 22 companies to buy the country’s third mobile telephone licence. The successful applicant will be required to start operations within 30 days of licensing, with an obligation to enter the market within a year.
A minimum bid of $25 million has been set for the 15-year licence by the Ministry of Transport and Telecommunications. The bidders are required to operate one or more networks with at least two million customers and to have a local partner.
The government will evaluate the proposals and select a winning bid within the next 60 days. Some of the interested companies include MTN Group and India’s Bharti Airtel.
Bids have been submitted by both international and domestic firms. Bidders are required to be registered in Mozambique and local firms must have an overseas partner. GTB
