American Tower has launched operations in Chile under the name ATC Sitios de Chile. The US infrastructure operator has entered into agreements to purchase 287 base station sites from Telefónica Chile.
It closed deals on 113 towers last week, with Telefónica Chile being an anchor tenant, and expects to close on the remaining 174 by the end of 2010.
American Tower chairman and CEO, Jim Taiclet, said the deal is a part of its plan to grow in Latin American countries and that recent spectrum auctions in Chile’s wireless market are expected to drive investment in network expansion. The company already has businesses in Brazil, where it has 1,600 towers, and Mexico, where it has 2,800.
The company also has expansion plans in India — where it owns 2,600 sites — and China.
Separately, the executive vice president for finance at American Tower, Jean Bua, has quit from her current role. Prior to American Tower, she was senior vice president, chief accounting officer and worldwide controller for Boston-based Iron Mountain. GTB
