China has allowed Google to operate in the country by renewing its licence by one year for Beijing Guxiang Information Technology. The search engine will need to stop automatically rerouting users of Google.cn to its site in Hong Kong as part of the renewal agreement.
The customers using Google’s search tab from within mainland China will now need an extra click, which will then direct the user to the Hong Kong site. The company is expecting to grow as high as $15-$20 billion annually in just a few years in China.
The company, which began to transfer Chinese users automatically to a website in Hong Kong to avoid Chinese internet censorship in March 2010, installed a link in June 2010 to its Hong Kong site on its China home page, allowing users to go the uncensored site, but not transferring them automatically.
