A private US company, NTP, is suing six smartphone makers for alleged infringement of patents. The Virginia-based company has filed a lawsuit against Apple, Google, HTC, LG Electronics, Microsoft and Motorola over eight patents related to the wireless delivery of email to mobile phones.
Allegedly infringing products include Apple’s iPhone and iPad, LG’s Ally and Incite, HTC’s T-Mobile G1 and Motorola’s Droid. Google and Microsoft are being sued for creating the Android and Windows Mobile operating systems used on the phones.
NTP is the company that successfully sued Research In Motion for the infringement of the same patents. The Blackberry maker had paid $612.5 million in a settlement to NTP, which holds a number of patents but does not manufacture any products.
NTP has also filed patent-infringement suits against mobile operators, including AT&T, Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile USA, Sprint Nextel and Verizon Wireless, owned by Verizon Communications and Vodafone Group. The suit has been stayed pending a full review of the patents by the US Patent and Trademark Office. GTB
